Exodus

Political and socio-economic problems in Venezuela started in 2016 led to a negative net migration rate. Venezuelans said they were forced to leave because of insecurity, violence, lack of access to food, medicine, essential services, and loss of income due to the economic situation.
The aftermath of this "exodus" impacted Colombia the most. According to the UNHCR, by October 2019, approximately 4.5 million Venezuelans had left the country, of which 1.6 million arrived at Colombia. Charity organizations and NGOs provided people with medical supplies and food. However, a large number of people end up in temporary settlements or live on the streets.
In early 2020th, the Colombian government announced a couple of new Special Stay Permits that would allow more than 100,000 Venezuelans to stay and work in the country. Besides, children born in the country from Venezuelan parents could acquire Colombian nationality. Nonetheless, vast numbers of people remain dispossessed
