The Life of a Man

According to a collective initiative of the World Health Organization and the International Agency for Research on Cancer GLOBOCAN, Russia is among the top five countries in the world where people died of cancer in 2018. Andrey Pavlenko, a 39-year-old leading oncology surgeon, who, in March 2018, was diagnosed with stage 3 stomach cancer. This led Andrey to a decision to draw attention to the problem of cancer aid in Russia: he started an online journal where he publicly tells the story of medical therapy that he has been undergoing. Through Pavlenkos story, both as a patient and as an oncology surgeon, hundreds of thousands of other oncology patients got an opportunity to be heard. Since March 2018 Andrey Pavlenko underwent eight chemotherapies and one stomach removal surgery in September. The attention of Russian society to his story, allowed Pavlenko to propose in the State Duma of Russia to change the system of oncological assistance at the federal level in the winter of 2019.
